Apparent rules (requiring that these rules be posted):

  3. Choose ten people and put their icons on this journal.

  6. You have to legitimately tag people.
  7. You cant say no tags.
  8. Everyone that has been TAGGED must make a journal entry.

Questions for the tagged follow the following section.

Questions Received:

  1. First thing that comes to mind?
  2. Do you like to learn?
  3. Why did you start watching MLP?
  4. What do you think is the hardest part of drawing?
  5. Do you like travelling?
  6. Apples?
  7. Favourite game?
  8. If you could have 1 superpower what would you choose?
  9. How did you start drawing?
  10. What do you think about nsfw art? (adult, mature, gore etc.)

Answers to said questions:

  1. A colour roughly between blue and grey, like a washed out navy blue.

  2. I like to learn if I'm not going to be given an formal exam about it later.
Otherwise I'm all for accumulating knowledge, particularly useful or not.

  3. Pretty much curiosity, ended up liking it. Currently in too deep (send help).

  4. Hard question.
         Non-drawing part of drawing:
            Getting started.
            Continuing where you left off.
            Deciding when to stop.
        Drawing part of drawing:
Breaking 2D for the first time.
I mean really, you know that stage where it's got all the qualities of something that's dimensional, but it's flat and you know it.
Getting past that is an absolute bitch.
            Really steep foreshortening.
I absolutely cannot draw guns being pointed at the viewer, that shit is beyond me.
Learning to draw people in a convincing/realistic and reliable manner.
                Trying, sorta failing.

  5. I enjoy travelling, for the most part. Long drives are all right if I get to drive (driving by LAX doesn't count as an enjoyable long drive), planes are also fun.
It's cool seeing new and unusual places.

  6. Green and Gala. The skin on a lot of other red apples doesn't come apart easily and tends to get stuck in my teeth (which is unpleasant).

  7. Video Game:
Out of more modern titles, probably Splinter: Cell Chaos Theory. I feel like they pretty much perfected the stealth-action formula with Chaos Theory.
It was also right on time for the whole dynamic lighting craze, so being able to hide in the dynamically lit shadows was just that much better.
If you've never played a Splinter Cell game and are looking to play one, pick up Chaos Theory.

Otherwise, Yoshi's Island, or Metal Slug 3. The games speak for themselves play both if you haven't.

  8. T-1000 Terminator type ability (that'd be rad).
Or total invisibility/astral projection or something, I'd go everywhere.
Or maybe the ability to modulate space-time and slow the passing of time locally so I could take long naps within the duration of mere seconds.

  9. I don't remember how I started, but I can say that being surrounded by my dad's work when I was really young was pretty motivating.
He was a Draftsman in the US Navy (retired DMC), and did cartoons for a few base publications on the side in addition to his other work.
He was away a lot of the time, but when he was around he'd be painting/sketching/etc.
So a lot of what I taught myself branched off of just trying things I'd seen him do.

  10. Adult/Mature:
        Concerning what other people produce:
If it's not something I'm into I don't mind just looking the other way. Different strokes for different folks, just don't tell me about it - I don't want to know.

         Producing it:
            It's something I can appreciate.
                It's fun.
Either for shock/wat value reasons, or for just reasons. Or maybe because shits 'n giggles.
Regardless of why, it's often something others can enjoy (again, don't tell me about it).
There's a lot of good practice to be had.
It could be miles out of your comfort zone if its something you've never done, and that's probably the one of the best places to learn things.
It's caused a few changes in my work flow to say the least.
Any critics you encounter will tell it like it is.
If something is wrong with the image you'll definitely hear about it, because it's likely to have spoiled the image entirely for that viewer.

    Gore/Blood/etc:
        It has its places.
Personally I try to only use whatever is really necessary for what I'm trying to portray.
In most cases there's no need for much more than small gashes/pools/splatters before a piece can appear fairly gruesome.
I think the mind does a pretty good job at filling in details, for the same reason people like to slow down to look at traffic accidents.

There's usually no reason to show the process that produced the aftermath, and that's where I draw the line for being excessive.
I don't need to draw someone being brutally gutted to tell the viewer that someone's been brutally gutted.
            Sure I might draw some intestines on the floor, and sure it'll look nasty;
but what you get is "ew gross, what the hell happened" rather than "ew gross", and that distinction is a plus in my book.

Questions for the tagged:

Borrowing what I got for Q10 because I think it's an interesting question.

  1. Do you have a career (long standing full time job/consistent work in particular field)? If so, what is it?
If not, what field are you either studying in or aspiring to eventually be a part of?

  2. Does that job/field relate to art? If so, is it/do you believe it will be fulfilling?
If it doesn't relate to art, why that field, and is it/do you believe it will be fulfilling?

  3. In terms of art, do you actively try to improve? What is some general advice you would give to someone looking to get better?

  4. Are you more comfortable with digital or traditional media, and where did you start learning more seriously?

  5. If you drive, what do you drive, and do you enjoy driving it?
What would you like to be driving instead/would like to be driving eventually?

  6. Do you have/have you ever made up some enormous fictional universe? If so, could you briefly describe it or its premise?
If you haven't (or if you have, if you please), what is your favourite fictional universe (apart from yours)?

  7. Have you ever had a near-death experience? What happened (or almost happened)?

  8. In your opinion, which culture has the best food? Do you have a favourite dish?

  9. In terms of art, what is something you personally struggle with.

  10. What are your thoughts on NSFW art (Adult/Mature/Gore/etc.)?

My apologies if you've already participated or if you really don't like these things.

I'm stealing one of your peopletags Underpable.
I'm also only tagging 9/10 people because I'm an absolute scumbag, and a 3x3 grid is better than a 2x5 one.

A Year Deep

6 min read
Hello folks, apparently a year has passed since I signed up here.

I know the vast majority of people who watch me on here probably won't see this, but here's to all of you anyway:

Thank you all so very much for being around. A lot of you are some of the most pleasant, talented, and entertaining people I've ever encountered and you've done more for me than I'm able to express coherently. The fact that people take moments out of their day to take a look at my silly drawings still strikes me as incredible, and has also been the prime motivator for me to keep going. Thanks to you folks, I've kept it up, and consequently, have learned more about art in general than I may have otherwise. For that, I am eternally grateful.

Additionally, I'm very aware of the amount of growth that has taken place, in terms of traffic (thanks to Google Analytics), and I recognize that there are a lot of people who contribute to the spread of my own and others' art via Reddit, Tumblr, Equestria Daily, etc. Without you folks, much of what I put up here would've definitely gone unseen. Given that, I'd like to extend additional thanks to those parties. You all, are part of the very vital backbone seen in this, and any other healthy community. Your importance should never go unacknowledged.

In addition to thanking all of you guys for sticking around, I'd like to share a little bit of what you guys didn't see (and if you're the reading type, a little bit of text based context).

About a year and a month ago I was a bit of a hater when it came to Friendship is Magic. I'd never watched it, and had no intent to, yet held a negative opinion of the show and it's unexpected fan base.

Now around mid September 2013, there was a day where absolutely everyone else was out of my house, and being in the thick of a summer break - I had nothing going, and was bored out of my mind. I then had a bit of a thought; I figured that it was somewhat unfair to dislike something I knew nothing about, so I strapped up and decided to watch s1e1 of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic (to educate myself).

I honestly skipped the intro after the words kicked in, everything about it violated the precedents set by the little boy component of my soul. I eventually found the opening scene with Twilight and Spike, and sat there, hating every minute of it. I skipped around in the episode, rewinding when something didn't make sense, just to shorten my encounter with it.

As this went on into the second and third episodes I skipped less often, slowly, and awkwardly realizing that this show was the embodiment of everything I had loved about cartoons when I was younger - just cleverly disguised as a toy selling show for little girls. The characters were memorable, lovable, and the show was generally engaging, and as a bonus, everything was leaking adorable.
So everyone eventually got home, and to avoid any questioning I promptly ended my marathon - three fourths through Season One. A complete turnaround had occurred within that time, I was effectively hooked. Over the rest of September I laid awake in bed late at night, watching two to four episodes whenever possible. I eventually finished Season Three and EQG, but was left wanting more.

There was eventually a point where my secret love of the show leaked into my normal hobbies.

This is the second mlp related thing I had drawn, the first was seen as thing of shame - that I promptly discarded in denial.

I actually went as far as to actually colour Spike, which I then hesitantly posted on deviantArt (under a different account). I promptly deleted it, ashamed, and mostly to avoid questioning from people I actually knew.

There was a bit of an intermission, then a little into October I made this account.

I honestly never intended to do much with it, just to have an outlet for this new found facet of my favourite hobby.
I drew this first, but opted not to post it, because I found it terrible.

I then tried again and ended up with the first picture I submitted here.

Which I'm exited to say is in the process of being recreated:

The rest is history I suppose.

What follows, is a small collection of things I've never posted that'd I'd like to share.

Some very very early stuff:

I meant to post this around Christmas 2013, but was out with family the entire time and didn't finish it:

The PSD title is "DayZero":

I really want to finish these, but have yet to do so, PSD titles are "Most Daring", and "Space Oddity":

Twilight Sparkle and Trixie:

Rainbow Dash, Soarin & Vinyl (this was going to be a zz top reference but eh).

/mlp/ Drawthread "Princess Celestia watching the World Cup and eating Munchies" & Some sketch:

Early case of Applebutt, predates "Marketing" & a request that I haven't finished:

Gilda, there's a Mexico joke in here somewhere:

Experimental coloring I did on a Twilight vs. Rarity image I never finished:

A more recent Twilight vs Rarity & Detail from "Past Due":

Rigged, 3D pony I made myself from scratch (box modeling is king) & a procrastination sketch:

Pinkie Pie:

Story stuff & Nondescript meeting Twilight:

Blame /mlp/ for this Fluttershy one & 3dsmax pony:

"Crusaders", I'd been playing a lot of Diablo 3. Babs was going to feature in Akarat's Champion mode but never got to that point:

/mlp/ Drawtheads, "Gilda in Latex" , "Soap MacTavish and Applejack kissing passionately":
There was also "Rarity giving Hitler a blowjob while rainbow dash films the whole thing", which I drew, but won't put here.

Anatomical reference I drew for myself while doing "Twilight's First Date - Page 7" & Something:

Pinkie & Tirekd:

And this, I believe it's self-explanitory:

Now here's a few things that you might recognize, but in their crudest forms:

My powerlevel is comprised entirely of pony related PSDs, and nothing more:

To this day, a year later - watching, reading about, and drawing miniature pastel horses remains my secret, guilty pleasure, and I love every minute of it.

Thanks again everyone.

Thanks,

I've been reluctant to use the journal feature at all, but I suppose it's about time I express some gratitude and share a few thoughts.
I really appreciate everyone's feedback, be it a favorite, watch, comment, criticism, or simply a view. I feel as if I don't say this enough, so thank you all so much. Just being able to stand back and see people from absolutely anywhere come along and enjoy something has really brightened my days.

I can't do thanks without mentioning the fine folks operating these blogs:
twilightsprinkle.tumblr.com/
mlpfim-fanart.tumblr.com/
Huge amount of respect for what goes on there, you guys are amazing.

And of course, to the Anonymous Deviant, who's so generously provided me with three months of premium, my reaction in a nutshell:

I want to share something, so here's the brushes I use for pretty much everything. They may not be too unique, but they've proved to be pretty versatile:
